According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the average Australian creates just over 2,000kg of waste each year. From plastic bags and sandwich wraps to food scraps and chemical waste, modern day living is doing more harm to the environment than good.

Fortunately, there are many easy ways you can make your home and lifestyle more eco-frindly, and most of those changes are simple swaps you can make during the weekly grocery run.

Swap One: Replace your light bulbs with LED globes. Not only do they consume up to 85 per cent less energy than halogen or incandescent lights, but they also last between 15,000 and 50,000 hours, and contain no mercury or lead. They also cut greenhouse gas emission, reduce landfill and operate at a much cooler temperature, making them safer.

Swap Two: Exchange plastic wrap and sandwich bags for natural beeswax food wraps. Made from natural products, washable and reusable, this eco-friendly swap is available from numerous online retailers and markets.

Swap Three: Swap your chemical-riddled household cleaners with natural products such as white vinegar, baking soda, lemons, or purchase natural cleaning products from retailers who specialize in natural and sustainable products.

Swap Four: Instead of buying paper towel and toilet paper that’s been bleached and processed, opt to buy products made from recycled or sustainable materials.

Swap Five: Many home fragrances are made using synthetic substances or toxic ingredients. Invest in an essential oil burner and diffuse natural essential oils for a sweet-smelling abode.

Swap Six: Beauty and cosmetic products are often made using chemicals and other man-made substances. Choose natural make-up and self-care products, such as swapping your supermarket moisturizer for coconut oil.
