What is rattan?
Rattan is a climbing palm that can be found in Australia, Asia and Africa – the name is used for over 600 species. Before being harvested, the palm stems vary from 1-2 inches wide and can be as long as 500 feet. They are cut and dried under the sun before being shipped to furniture manufacturers who transform it into various pieces found in the home.
How is rattan used?
There are many ways to use rattan in furniture. Some examples are mirrors, chairs, lamps, tables, baskets, sporting goods and birdcages. Rattan is actually so popular that it’s sometimes used to describe a style of furniture, even if it’s make from synthetic material. But true rattan is similar to wood, cane or bamboo in its texture and feel.
What is the difference between rattan and wicker?
Rattan refers to the natural material used to make furniture and other items, while wicker is a type of weave. So you can have wicker furniture that’s made from natural materials, including rattan, or from synthetic materials such as plastic – which can be more durable outside. We’ve included a mix of natural rattan and wicker mirrors here – with details of the materials each one is made of – so you can choose one that suits your style.
