Colin Jones, a category expert at Appliances Online, adds that robot vacuums are a particularly competitive sub-category for brands.

Other factors to consider when choosing a new vacuum cleaner

Beyond the vacuum cleaner brand, it’s important to think about the type of vacuum and what features will have the biggest impact for your home.

Appliances Online category expert Colin Jones told Better Homes & Gardens it’s good idea to “take into account the layout of your home, whether it is single-storey or double-storey.”

“For some people, moving a large vacuum cleaner from room to room or carrying it upstairs can be a challenge, especially since some models are quite heavy,” he said.

Other factors include:

  • The type of flooring in your home (hardwood, tiles, carpet, rugs or mixed flooring)
  • Whether you have pets
  • The type of furniture and features you want to vacuum around
  • If there are special areas you want to vacuum, such as ceilings, windowsills, the car etc
  • If you want a floor cleaner that mops as well

So the vacuum cleaner brand could be a starting point for choosing a model. Or you could go the other way and focus on a type of vacuum, then choose one from a brand you want.
