It may not seem that close, but Christmas is less than three months away now – and that actually makes it a great time to get a new artificial Christmas tree before they sell out or can’t be delivered in time. Some may even be on sale – including trees from beloved Christmas tree brand Balsam Hill.

While nothing beats the smell and aesthetic of a real Christmas tree, they’re not always easy to maintain. I’m speaking from experience here – a few Christmases ago I got a potted Norfolk Island Pine that enjoyed a sunny spot in my garden when it wasn’t decorated for Christmas each year. But it grew too big to thrive in a pot, so after last Christmas I gave it to a family member who has a property where they could plant it (they grow big). It’s happy in the ground, and I’m ready for a new Christmas tree.

How to choose a quality artificial Christmas tree

A great Christmas tree should suit be easy to assemble and decorate, fit in the space where you want it and be relatively easy to maintain. So when it comes to artificial trees, here are some of the most important factors to consider:

  • Height and width: To get the best tree for your home, measure the spot where you plan to place it and make sure you leave enough room around and above it. Ideally, you want a gap of about 15 centimetres between the tree branches and the ceiling and walls. Depending on the artificial tree, you may have a choice widths, such as full, slim or pencil, and height ranges for fake Christmas trees can be anywhere from tiny tabletop designs to impressive, realistic-looking trees more than 2.5-metres high.
  • Branches: Hinged or hook-in branches are the two most common options for artificial Christmas trees. Hinged branches consist of just a few parts and have permanently fixed branches that are easier to set up. Hook-in branches are individually hooked into a specific spot on a central pole. They take more time to put together but tend to be less expensive.
  • Lights: Do you want a tree that comes with lights or do you already own lights? Pre-lit trees can be more expensive but they will save you time and stress when it comes to assembling and disassembling. Look for trees that include additional bulbs or offer replacement lights for purchase so you can keep your tree glowing for many Christmases to come.
  • Warranty: Some of the best artificial Christmas trees offer warranties, usually between around 1-3 years. This can give you peace of mind for your purchase, and also suggests the tree is designed to last. In fact, with the right storage and maintenance, an artificial Christmas tree could last 10 years or more.
Is it better to get a real Christmas tree or a fake one?

A fake Christmas tree can be better if you want a tree that’s low maintenance, easy to set up and lasts for years. But if you want the authentic smell of pine or more natural materials, a real Christmas tree might be more suitable. So really, both are good choices – it just depends on what you want and what suits your household.

Are expensive artificial Christmas trees worth it?

Some more expensive artificial Christmas trees are designed based on real tree branches and needles, including variations that you would naturally see in a real tree. They can also be made with more premium materials, which also adds to the overall price.

If you’re considering a more expensive artificial Christmas tree, you could visit a store to view it, check the return policy or even request a sample. Balsam Hill, for example, offers sample branches for $49 – and the cost is credited towards a tree if you decide to buy one.

But whether it’s worth it really depends on what you want from the tree – some people put a lot of value on having a beautiful, real or realistic Christmas tree during the holiday season, while others may not mind as much (or have the space for one).
