No matter what part of Australia you’re living in, wet and humid weather can cause mould to turn up in your bathroom, wardrobe and other parts of your home at any time of the year. What’s more, steam from the shower or kitchen could hang around and create a nice environment for mould to grow. While there are plenty of DIY mould removal and prevention strategies, a dehumidifier can be one of the best ways to effectively combat the effects of damp or muggy weather in Australia.

As someone who lives in a subtropical part of the country, I can tell you first-hand that I’ve used a lot of strategies (including DIY dehumidifiers) to deal with mould. But buying an actual dehumidifier was a game-changer, keeping the bathroom mould-free for months at a time and preventing musty smells in the bedrooms and wardrobes.

The Ausclimate model I have even helps dry clothes during wet weather thanks to the laundry mode.

“Depending on where your dehumidifier is placed, the storage capacity and the amount of moisture in your home, it can help to save you time, money and effort in the long run.”

Ausclimate Cool Seasons Premium 10L Desiccant Dehumidifier (AU1910DD)

Ausclimate Cool Seasons Premium 10L dehumidifier

Australian brand Ausclimate has built a strong reputation for its dehumidifiers and this model is a best-seller for its powerful ability to extract up to 10 litres of moisture per day. Despite the name, it can operate in temperatures ranging from 1°C to 40°C.

I’ve personally used it across the seasons to keep mould at bay in my home and, after nearly two years, I have to say it’s one of the best appliances I’ve ever bought. But as a desiccant dehumidifier, it does heat up the room a bit – which can be nice in winter but is worth keeping in mind in summer.

“This dehumidifier was Rated No 1 in a Choice Test and it has lived up to that placing. It’s compact and easily portable,” one customer shared in a 5-star review on Amazon, where it has a 4.6-star average from over 265 global ratings. They added that “in a 2hr cycle it can reduce the humidity from 90% to 50%. It generates a little warmth while running but, for winter use, that’s a bonus for us. We’re very pleased with it!”

Key features:

  • 3L water tank
  • Suitable for room sizes up to 50m2 or 125m2
  • Auto-swing louvre for air flow direction control and high-efficiency drying

This was actually the first dehumidifier I ever used, borrowed from a friend during a very wet summer. I remember how much fresher the air felt every time I walked into a room after using it. It’s actually what made me decide to buy a dehumidifier for my home.

“This is a great machine, I’m in Qld and it has been a god send with all this humidity. I haven’t found it to be overly noisy like some people suggest..It has a large tank which fills up twice a day. Only issue is I wish the lid was an open area like the cheaper ones as I have knocked it closed a couple of times. Would highly recommend,” one customer shared in a 5-star review on The Good Guys, where it has a 4.8-star average from over 36 customers.

How does a dehumidifier work?

Differing from portable air conditioners and evaporative coolers that work to cool a room – often by adding moisture – dehumidifiers work by sucking air through sensors to extract moisture from the air. This moisture then goes into a water storage container you empty when full.

“Due to their portable nature, dehumidifiers are great to use in various parts of your home that may have issues with moisture or mould,” Appliances Online category expert Colin Jones says.

“These units are best placed in rooms that have a lack of ventilation or excess moisture,” Colin says, “On high humidity days, you may want to consider using these between 10 to 12 hours a day, even 24/7 if your unit has the capacity”.

“Most dehumidifiers use little power, which will allow you to operate these for long periods of time. Having a unit such as a portable dehumidifier will help in protecting parts of your home and clothing.”

Colin recommends the following sizes:

  • 6-10L capacity dehumidifier for cupboards or wardrobes
  • 10-25L capacity dehumidifier for small areas
  • 20-35L capacity dehumidifier for medium areas
  • 35L+ capacity dehumidifier for large areas
Mitsubishi dehumidifier air purifier

How can I tell if humidity is damaging my home?

Colin highlights there are several signs that high humidity levels are having an impact on your home and belongings, these being:

  1. Water stains on your walls or windows
  2. A musty smell from a specific area
  3. Small amounts of mould beginning to appear
  4. Windows beginning to look foggy and small amounts of running water
  5. Your skin feels tight, clammy and sticky

The rising popularity in dehumidifiers in Australia suggests most of us have some issues at home, made even more extreme by seasonal patterns and increased rain events. In fact, the dehumidifier market is now expected to grow by 7.2% per year to a value of US$36.4 million by 2030 according to market analysis by Grand View Research.
