Rugs are a great way to soften a hard floor, zone open living spaces and add warmth (both aesthetically and literally in some cases). But after a messy meal with food strewn across the floor, or a rainy day when the kids (or pets) walk mud through the house, your rug will probably look a little worse for wear.
Wouldn’t it be nice if you could simply bundle it all up and throw it straight into the washing machine? Thanks to new technologies and materials, you can actually do just that, with plenty of great machine-washable rugs available in Australia – including from top designer brands like Interior Secrets, which has a selection of designer and machine-washable rugs.
We’ve been keeping an eye on the trends and even tested one out at home earlier this year to find out exactly how easy they are to clean. The key is to get a rug that has the right weight and dimensions to fit in your washing machine (more on that later), or just find the nearest laundromat with a large enough machine for your rug.
To help narrow down your choice to only the cream of the crop, here is our edit of the best washable rugs in Australia, in a range of colours, sizes and prices – including some that are on sale now.

Best for: geometric style
If you’re drawn to lighter colours but don’t want to wash your rug too often, a pattern like the one on this rug from Miss Amara could be ideal. A plush 8mm pile makes this rug super soft underfoot, and the built-in underlay has been designed to conveniently keep the rug in place.
The 180x120cm version of this rug is also suited to washing machines with a capacity of 6kg or more, so you can simply fold it up and pop it in your machine at home when it needs a wash. What’s more, over 19 customers have given this rug a 5-star rating, with one thorough reviewer sharing: “I love the softness of this rug! We’ve previously had another similar rug that was a nightmare to clean so I love that I’ll be able to put this in the machine and also that the pile isn’t too thick which can often be prone to matting but this looks much more convenient for a loungeroom space.”

Yves terracotta sunset minimal washable rug
from $179.10 (10% off applied at checkout, usually $199), Miss Amara

Being stain-resistant, this Miss Amara rug can have a whole bottle of wine poured over it without any trouble (though we definitely don’t recommend wasting wine!). Pair this rug with light wooden furniture and stripy navy-esque pillows to complete the coastal look.

Are machine-washable rugs worth it?
Washable rugs are definitely worth it if you have pets or young children in your home. For houses that prioritise family living, a washable rug means you don’t have to sweat the small stuff (and stains) and easily clean away any mess that makes it to the floor.
Three easy tips to help you choose a washable rug
- Know where you’ll put it first. This might seem obvious – and that’s exactly why it’s a good place to start. Look at the space and other furniture and decor you already have, so you can focus on washable rugs with designs that complement or refresh it.
- Measure the space. Most washable rugs in Australia come in a few sizes, so measuring the space and checking the rug’s dimensions will ensure you get the best fit.
- Check the washing specs. This goes for both the rug and your washing machine, as some larger rugs might need to be taken to the laundromat. For example, Ruggable rugs that measure up to 150x215cm or 185cm round can fit in most washing machines with a weight capacity of 6kg or more, while Double’s Shag rugs measuring up to 160x230cm also usually fit in 6kg washers. Most washable rug brands will include details for the rug you choose, but you can check the weight and dimensions before buying them to get an idea of if it will fit. Otherwise, you could always take it to a laundromat (as our reviewer did when testing out a large Ruggable rug).
